  • Place: Glen Afric Country Lodge, Hartebeesport

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), bilharzia is one of the two most neglected tropical diseases, both acute and chronic situations. It’s scary to hear how the state of the water in Africa is impacting people’s health on a daily basis.

Dr. Meerash Ramsammy, a specialist neurosurgeon, has a special interest in all emergency brain and spine procedures as well as non-traumatic conditions of the brain and spinal cord in both children and adults. He has great experience in Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, which is an infection caused by a parasitic worm that lives in fresh water in subtropical and tropical regions. We all are aware of the condition of a number of our freshwater lakes and dams in South Africa, and he will be sharing his experiences of what damage dirty water and bilharzia can do to the brain.
